About English Comp 1 (ENC 1101)
English Composition I is a comprehensive course embodying the fundamentals of effective expression with emphasis on expository writing and logical thinking. This course serves as an introduction to college-level writing.
The focus of this course is primarily on informational texts. Students will be analyzing authors' arguments, as well as writing their own argumentative and informational papers throughout the semester.

Note: The information below (including dates) is subject to change. Updated information will be included in the syllabus in August. Students will also get more detailed assignment guidelines at the beginning of each unit.
Unit 1: Style Analysis Essay
Students will learn how to analyze an author’s style in argumentative and informative writing (i.e. tone, diction, etc.). Students will also learn how to effectively summarize, paraphrase, and directly quote source material.
Unit 2: Analysis of an Argument Essay
Students will learn more about argumentative writing techniques and analyze a variety of texts for elements of argument.
Unit 3: Investigative Research Essay
Students will learn to analyze visual rhetoric and will more deeply study elements of argument (i.e. logical fallacies).
Unit 4: Argumentative Research Paper
Students will learn about different genres of argumentative writing. They will end the course by composing an annotated bibliography and writing a research paper.
